Ink sticks are considered one of the Four Treasures of the Study. This is a phrase used for the four essential tools a Chinese artist must have. The other three are brushes, paper and ink slabs.
The ink stick was first used around 2,000 years ago, and continues to be popular today even with the availability of liquid ink because of the amount of control it gives an artist over his or her ink. After grinding the ink stick into a powder on an ink slab, the artist mixes in water to make the ink. The amount of water will determine the consistency of the ink.
